Having served a career in the British Armed Forces, I decided to step out from the restrictions of social norms and forge a new career. One of love and passion, photography no longer being a hobby nor just another job, but a lifestyle made by my own choosing. 

Drawing inspiration from life's experiences; from the green fields of rural Essex as a boy to the turbulent sands of the Middle East as a soldier, I have gained an eye for life. Always moving and learning as I have traversed the continents, discovering anew for myself and within. Striving to capture the world that surrounds me, wherever I may be, as I see it. Resulting in a love for travel photography and visual cultures. 

Now based in South London, I have been exploring myself and my practice through both film and digital mediums. Working under the pseudonym of ‘Hugh Gary’, an unlikely name acquired through my travels where ‘Gareth’ is often hard to pronounce, outside of the English-speaking world. Focusing on documentary photography, whether be recording one of my expeditions, the social world we live in or exploring the narratives and stories of known works through the medium of Lego mini-figures.

Gaining a BA (Hons) in Photography along with an ARPS distinction from the Royal Photographic Society, has shown me the importance of art and culture in our societies which I am developing my photographic practice further in the field while studying at UCL's London College of Communication. All this has led me to broaden my repertoire of knowledge in establishing an educational practice, sharing my passion and experiences in educating the next generation. Gaining a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the Institute of Education at University College London.
